The Garden Grove mother of two was killed on Mother’s Day when the suspected DUI driver crashed through the bedroom wall

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (KABC) — A Mother’s Day tragedy for a Garden Grove family after a suspected drunk driver crashed into their home just before 2 a.m. Sunday

“You wake up to a loud explosion and I can’t even imagine what the family was or went through that night,” the Garden Grove police officer said. Nick Jensen.

Janet Carillo was in bed with her husband when a Toyota Camry sedan crashed through the wall of their bedroom.

“When officers arrived, they found the victim trapped under the car that had driven into the residence,” Jensen said.

The 40-year-old mother of two teenagers died at the scene of the accident. Her husband was not injured.

“I can’t even imagine what the family is going through,” Jensen said. “On Mother’s Day morning, you expect to wake up and reward your mother for all the wonderful things she has done, and you wake up with that thought.”

According to police, Jadir Salazar Montano, 35, of Riverside, was behind the wheel of the car that hit the home on Magnolia Street.

The cause of the crash has yet to be determined, but authorities suspect Salazar Montano was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“At Magnolia and Chapman there are some gradients to the north and south,” Jensen said. “For Magnolia, sometimes speed can play a role if you go through these things a little too quickly. Distracted driving. There are a number of things that could be causing this.”

Investigators said the suspect fled the scene but was caught on a neighboring street.

“It is possible that one of the family members was chasing the suspect and then some passers-by who happened to be stopped saw the commotion, heard what was going on; “People were screaming and eventually following him and basically helping him set a trap, contain him in an area,” he said.

Salazar Montano faces several possible charges, including driving under the influence, hit-and-run and intoxicated manslaughter.
