Drunk driving crash kills people in Berkeley County | Magazine News

GERRARDSTOWN – A crash involving a drunk driver killed a 15-year-old early Saturday morning, leading to criminal charges against the driver.

Around 4 a.m. Saturday, officers with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department responded to a crash at the intersection of Douty Drive and Back Creek Valley Road. When they arrived at the scene, they made contact with Chad Phillips, 21, of Falling Waters, and a woman. A lifeless teenager sat in the back seat and was soon pronounced dead.

Both Phillips and the woman accused the other of being the driver of the vehicle, but due to a careful investigation by officers, it was determined that Phillips was the driver. During an interview with Phillips, officers found reason to believe he was under the influence of alcohol, and after field sobriety tests were conducted, Phillips was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in death.

The investigations are still ongoing.
