Police in Ohio fatally shot an Amazon warehouse guard who was trying to kill a supervisor, authorities said

Authorities say a security guard trainee at an Amazon warehouse in Ohio was fatally shot by police after he tried to shoot his supervisor and later shot an officer who was saved by his bulletproof vest

The first shooting occurred at the West Jefferson warehouse around 4:40 p.m. Sunday and was captured on surveillance footage, police said during a news conference Monday.

Ali Hamsa Yusuf, 22, walked up behind the guard and pointed a gun at the guard’s head, police said, but the gun apparently malfunctioned and the bullet narrowly missed the guard, who was uninjured. Officials said there were more than 100 workers in the building at the time of the shooting.

Yusuf soon fled the building but was discovered later Sunday in Columbus by Madison County authorities. Franklin Township and Columbus police attempted to stop his vehicle a short time later, at which point Yusuf exited the vehicle and began shooting at a Columbus officer, who authorities said was struck by a bullet but was not seriously injured due to his bulletproof vest .

Yusuf then tried to run away as other officers shot at him, and he was struck by at least one bullet. He was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later. The Columbus officer, who was just a four-year veteran of the force, was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and released later Sunday.

According to police, Yusuf was not allowed to carry a weapon on duty. It is also not yet known why he tried to shoot his superior. Yusuf also has no known criminal record, the authorities said.
