Documents detail the story of Shekita Maxwell’s run-ins with the law

During our research, we found several cases that brought Maxwell into trouble with the law.

MACON, Ga. — With four days left in early voting, there are several races 13WMAZ is tracking — including the race for Macon-Bibb County mayor.

Last week we shared the platforms for Mayor Lester Miller and challenger Shekita Maxwell, but Maxwell declined to do an interview. 13WMAZ had planned to ask Maxwell about her goals for office and a long history of run-ins with the law.

Court records and reports from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office detail arguments with an apartment landlord, family members, co-workers and her children’s dance teacher.

Maxwell initially accepted an interview, then canceled it and rescheduled the appointment. In the end, as it turns out, Maxwell declined several other interview requests since March.

However, in the interest of transparency, 13WMAZ is sharing some examples uncovered in background research so voters have all the information they need when they go to the polls.

Although Maxwell declined to speak with 13WMAZ, our invitation remains open if she would like to share her goals for the office or address any of these cases.

In an incident report from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, Maxwell is described as “angry” after her children’s dance teacher called to pick her up. According to the report, she became “impatient” as she waited for the teacher to discuss the situation and turned off the music because it damaged an amplifier.

Maxwell said she was sentenced to anger management classes because of that incident, according to her testimony in an unrelated lawsuit about a year later.

Maxwell made a statement after suing the United States Postmaster General after she was fired from her job at the U.S. Postal Service after less than a month. According to the Post, her arguments with colleagues escalated into violence. A federal judge dismissed their lawsuit.

Maxwell was working at the polls in Bibb County when a man called the Bibb Sheriff’s Office to say Maxwell wouldn’t let him in. The man was a Republican poll watcher. The incident report states that Maxwell’s supervisor told her to let him in, but she refused.

Macon-Bibb County terminated its agreement with Maxwell and her company, Royal Science, after accusing Maxwell of “mismanaging” nearly $21,000 in anti-violence funds. The county said it sent Maxwell two demand letters demanding the money be refunded. On the phone at the time, Maxwell denied knowing anything about the letters, although county records show she had responded to one of them.

Maxwell faces battery charges stemming from an August incident at the Bowman Station Apartments.

According to court documents, Maxwell was upset because maintenance workers got dust on her car. This allegedly led to an argument in the office, during which Maxwell apparently lunged at a female employee and attempted to grab her by the neck.

Last month, a judge rejected her request for immunity, in which Maxwell argued that she acted in self-defense. The judge rejected Maxwell’s argument that the leasing manager used “aggressive words.”
