A boil water warning remains in effect for parts of Jefferson County

Following a major water pipe burst in Jefferson County, Birmingham Water Works continues to help the community as the boil water warning remains in effect. The warning was introduced as a precautionary measure due to the size of the water main burst. During a press conference on Monday at 1 p.m., BWW stated that it would continue for at least 24 to 36 hours. According to BWW, more than 10,000 boxes of water had been distributed at this time. Birmingham Water Works ordered a major main shutdown Friday evening, affecting more than 10,000 people in northwest Jefferson County. Johnny Howze, a Forestdale resident, said: “It was kind of frustrating because my doctor said I had to drink three bottles of water every morning and you had to boil it and then let it cool. And that’s frustrating.” Michael Johnson is general manager at Waterworks Birmingham. He said: “This particular pipe was made of cast iron and with a cast iron pipe sometimes if it breaks it can burst like your windscreen. The rupture occurred at the western filtration plant in the Pratt City neighborhood of Birmingham. Following a major water main break in Jefferson County, Birmingham Water Works continues to help the community as a boil water warning remains in effect.

The warning was triggered as a precautionary measure due to the size of the water main break. During a press conference on Monday at 1 p.m., BWW stated that it would take at least 24 to 36 hours.

According to BWW, more than 10,000 cases of water have been distributed so far.

Birmingham Water Works resolved a major water main outage Friday evening that affected more than 10,000 people in northwest Jefferson County.

The break occurred at the Westfilter plant in Birmingham’s Pratt City district.

The bottled water distribution will take place on May 13th from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Walmart, 2473 Hackworth Road in Adamsville
  • West Jefferson Baptist Church, 4901 Freewill Road Quinton
  • Fire Station #18, 200 Dugan Ave. in Birmingham

On May 14, water will be distributed at the Adamsville Walmart on Hackworth Road until noon.

During the boil water warning, the agency is asking customers to bring water to a boil for at least three minutes and allow it to cool before using it for cooking or drinking, or to use bottled water instead.
