Bodycam footage shows police killing a man in a northwest Austin apartment

Two Austin police officers shot a 44-year-old man at least five times at a northwest Austin apartment complex on April 27 after he allegedly pointed his firearm at police, according to body-worn camera footage from three officers at the scene .

The footage was released 10 business days after the shooting, according to Austin Police Department protocol.

The footage shows the moment officers Adam Reinhart and Kai Finch shot Thomas Dray Price, who Austin police had previously identified as the shooting victim. The bodycam footage of a third officer, Peter Miller, was also released. Miller did not fire his weapon.

There were no injuries to bystanders or officers, interim Austin Police Chief Robin Henderson said during a news conference hours after the shooting.

Henderson said the incident began April 26 when police received calls at 11:34 and 11:42 p.m. about loud noise and music coming from cars on the north side of the Summer Grove apartment complex at 7905 San Felipe Blvd., near US 183 and McNeil, Got Drive, in Williamson County.

At 12:14 a.m., law enforcement received another 911 call indicating that Price was armed and running through the complex, a news release said. Callers said they heard gunshots and that Price was holding four to five men at gunpoint, the release said. After the third emergency call was received, the police were dispatched.

They arrived at 12:22 a.m. and began searching the complex for Price and other injured people. Officers initially found several men who callers said Price was holding at gunpoint, a statement said. In the footage, police can be seen telling a man to walk backwards toward them with his hands over his head. He can be heard giving officers a description of Price and saying that another witness heard Price say a few days earlier that he wanted to shoot a dog.

About five minutes later, Price is seen emerging from the doorway of a building. Police said he was holding a gun, although bodycam footage is too grainy to show a gun.

Officers, including Reinhart and Finch, can be heard telling Price to raise his hands and drop his weapon as he comes into view of several officers. The orders were repeated in Spanish. Police said Price did not follow officers’ commands. The bodycam footage shows Reinhart and Finch firing their semi-automatic firearms at least five times.

The video does not show Price receiving life-saving assistance or being handcuffed. He was later taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:39 a.m., a news release said.

After the incident, a SWAT team was called to the apartment from which Price emerged, Henderson previously said, but no one else was found.
