In a press conference on Monday, a spokesman for EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell reiterated the EU’s concerns about the ongoing violent crackdown against pro-Western protesters in Georgia.

The speaker strongly condemned attempts at intimidation, threats and physical attacks against protesters, civil society activists, politicians, journalists and media workers, citing recent “brutal actions” overnight.

The spokesman stressed the importance of safeguarding the right to protest and called on the authorities in Georgia to ensure this right and conduct proper investigations into the incidents. They also stressed the expectation that those responsible for the violence will be brought to justice.

Although the European Union and its member states are closely monitoring the situation, they have not yet decided on sanctions. The spokesman noted that Georgia is a candidate country and expressed hope that the authorities will return to the European path.
