K-9 handed over to animal shelter, cause for investigation

According to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, the retired K-9 from Kona was surrendered to the Liberty County Animal Shelter in April 29 from Deputy Trevon Tolson: “Sheriff (William) Bowman did not agree to the retired dog being treated in this manner, and had no prior knowledge of it,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “The welfare and proper care of all dogs, both active and retired, is of the utmost importance to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, and any allegations of abuse or neglect are taken very seriously.” Tolson was assigned to the patrol division and his current K -9 was assigned to another supervisor pending the outcome of the investigation. Back in March 2021, the Sheriff’s Office announced that Kona had joined the department as its newest K-9. Kona was retired and discharged to Tolson on December 20, 2023. One day after she was surrendered to the shelter, Kona was adopted by a previous caretaker. News of this investigation follows another K-9 unit investigation that began March 21. According to LCSO, Sheriff Bowman was informed that Lt. Corey Nadeau and Sgt. David Abbgy, the supervisor of the K-9 department, falsified training documents to recertify the sheriff’s office canines. Both resigned before the investigation was completed. The GBI is currently investigating and criminal charges are possible. An investigation is underway after a retired Liberty County K-9 was surrendered to an animal shelter.

According to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, retired K-9, Kona, was surrendered to the Liberty County Animal Shelter on April 29 by Deputy Trevon Tolson.

Tolson was assigned to the patrol division and his current K-9 was reassigned to another handler pending the outcome of the investigation.

Back in March 2021, the Sheriff’s Office announced that Kona had joined the department as its youngest K-9. Kona was retired on December 20, 2023 and turned over to Tolson.
