NBM commends Tinubu for suspending cybersecurity levy

The Neo Black Movement, NBM of Africa, has commended President Bola Tinubu for suspending the proposed 0.5 percent cyber security levy on all electronic transactions in Nigeria.

The National President of the organization, Olorogun Ese Kakor, in a statement made available to journalists in Benin City, said the President’s decision was the right step in the direction.

Recall that President Tinubu had recently asked the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to suspend the implementation of the controversial cybersecurity levy policy and ordered a review.

Olorugun Kakor described the President’s decision as proof that he had listened to the outcry of the people, saying the policy, if implemented, would have further impoverished Nigerians.

He also described President Tinubu as a “listening, responsive and reactive person” who cares about the affairs of citizens.

“What Mr. President did when he called for the suspension of the cybersecurity levy is extremely commendable because we have known him for a very long time and we know that he is a listening, responsive and reactive person.

“So it doesn’t surprise me that he immediately ordered the suspension. Second, it is good that the President acted, and that is why we will go back to the drawing board to take another look at the act.

“Cybercrime is undoubtedly an important part of security and that is why every government would like to consider an enabling law that will strengthen it and give more powers to the institutions entrusted with this responsibility to ensure efficiency and combat the serious devastating consequences of cybercrime in the country and destroy our reputation as a country.

“We really want to commend the president for that. We would also like to urge Nigerians to agree with this government that the law in this area of cybercrime needs a critical overhaul,” Kakor said.

He urged Nigerians to be patient with the Tinubu-led government and support its policies to stabilize the economy in the shortest possible time.
