Who is Archit Grover, the Indian-origin man arrested in Canada’s largest gold and cash heist? – First post

In April, one of the largest gold and cash thefts in history occurred in Canada.

“This story is sensational and, as we joke, probably belongs in a Netflix series,” Peel police chief Nishan Duraiappah said at the time.

In the latest development of the brazen multi-million dollar gold heist at Toronto’s main airport, a man of Indian origin has been arrested in the country.

This comes almost a month after the arrest of five other people involved in the theft.

Let’s take a closer look.

The arrest

According to police, investigators arrested and charged Archit Grover at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport on May 6 as he flew in from India.

Accordingly, the police had already issued a nationwide arrest warrant against him PTI.

The 36-year-old is charged with theft of more than 5,000 Canadian dollars and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, police said in a statement on Thursday.

Grover, also known as Archie, was held for a bail hearing and appeared in the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.

He is also facing gun-related charges in the US along with the man accused of being the driver who got away with the fold The star.

The “Netflix-Worthy” Heist

On April 17, 2023, an air cargo container containing gold bars and foreign currency was stolen from a secure storage facility in Pearson using forged documents, Peel Regional Police said PTI.

The gold and currency had arrived on an Air Canada flight from Zurich, Switzerland to Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.

Shortly after the flight landed, the cargo was unloaded and transported to a separate location on the airport premises.

A day later it was reported missing to the police.

The stolen cargo contained 6,600 bars of pure 9999 gold weighing 400 kilograms and valued at over $20 million and a foreign currency value of C$2.5 million.

Canadian police subsequently launched an investigation in collaboration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in the United States.

In an earlier statement, police said investigators seized a kilogram of gold believed to be from the theft, worth about $89,000 Canadian, smelting equipment and about $434,000 in Canadian currency.

According to the National PostPolice had previously alleged that some of the profits from the stolen gold were used to finance a cross-border arms smuggling operation.

Last month, two Indian-origin people – Parmpal Sidhu, 54, and Amit Jalota, 40 – both from Ontario, were arrested in the case, along with Ammad Chaudhary, 43, Ali Raza, 37, and Prasath Paramalingam, 35. PTI reported.

In addition, Canada-wide arrest warrants were issued for Simran Preet Panesar, 31, of Brampton, who was also an Air Canada employee at the time of the theft, and Arsalan Chaudhary, 42, of Mississauga, the statement said.

According to police, at least two former Air Canada employees helped in the brazen theft; one of them is now in custody and the other has an arrest warrant.

A month after the gold theft in Pennsylvania, 25-year-old Durante King-Mclean of Brampton was arrested for allegedly driving a car with 65 handguns in the trunk on the way to Canada. He is still in custody there awaiting trial Global News.

Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick confirmed Sidhu and Panesar’s employment with the national airline.

“One left the company prior to the arrests announced today and the second was suspended,” he said.
