Police said the man shot teenagers and their parents. After a six-hour standoff, he was taken into custody.

CHALLIS, Idaho – A 47-year-old Challis man, Curtis Lee Caton, is in custody at the Lemhi County Jail after shooting minors and their parents and then arguing with police for six hours.

According to the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), officers responded to the area near Summit Circle and Blue Mountain Rd. in Challis on May 11 at approximately 11:25 p.m. Caton and several minors were involved in a disturbance and police said Caton shot at them as they were leaving.

BCSO said some parents later confronted Caton at his home, but he then fired at them, hitting several vehicles.

“Officers contacted Caton at his Summit Circle residence at approximately 12:51 p.m. to obtain details of the incident,” a news release said. “Mr Caton slammed the door and refused to speak further to deputies. There was a 23-year-old woman in the apartment at the time.”

When police spoke with Caton, he eventually released the woman and surrendered after six hours. Nobody was injured.

Caton was taken to the Custer County Jail and charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle. He was then transported to the Lemhi County Jail for incarceration.

BCSO said additional charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing. Additional charges related to the incident are pending as the investigation continues.

“Custer County Sheriff Maydole would like to thank the community for their patience and cooperation as deputies worked to keep the situation under control, ultimately leading to a peaceful outcome. We appreciate the response and resources of the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office SWAT and the Southeast Idaho STAR tactical unit.” “Our teams are working with our deputies to find a successful resolution,” the release said.
