Man who tried to blame his twin brother for raping a nine-year-old girl and a jogger has been sentenced to 140 years in prison

A man in California who tried to blame his twin brother for the historic rapes of a 9-year-old girl and a jogger has been sentenced to 140 years in prison.

Kevin Konther, 58, was convicted in February of two counts of rape and several other charges, including a sexual assault on a 12-year-old victim Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Police arrested Konther and his twin brother in 2019 after DNA technology linked them to the 1995 rape of a nine-year-old girl who was walking home after buying school supplies and to another rape of a 32-year-old jogger in 1998.

Konther grabbed the runner and covered her mouth after jumping out of the bushes wearing only a pair of shoes, the law firm said.

The twins were both arrested because they have the same DNA, but recorded conversations between the two revealed “several incriminating statements from Konther, including admissions that he committed the crimes,” according to the law firm.

A judge sentenced Konther on Monday to 140 years to life in prison, while no charges were filed against his twin brother.

“The DNA was the linchpin that gave this monster a name — and that name is Kevin Konther,” said Todd Spitzer, a county attorney.

“The tireless pursuit of justice by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office has ensured that no monster preying on young girls and young women will ever again be free to jump from the bushes.”
