Traffic Alert: Closures and detours along I-10 in Jacksonville

The more than $170 million project will add two additional lanes in each direction to Interstate 10.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Multiple road closures and detours will be in effect this weekend along Interstate 10 in Jacksonville as the Florida Department of Transportation continues work on an expansion project.

The project is intended to relieve traffic in a district where, according to authorities, both the population and the economy are growing.

“We’re widening bridges, we’re widening the roadway to support growth and hopefully at the end of the day reduce commute time for people coming into downtown Jacksonville from either Macclenny or the Westside,” said Hampton Ray, an FDOT spokesman , said.

FDOT hired Superior Construction for the $170 million-plus project and hopes for completion in early 2025.

“This project is a really great project as it takes place on the existing right of way. We actually didn’t have to acquire any additional right of way to do the expansion for the construction project,” Ray said.

Once completed, drivers on I-10 from Interstate 295 to Interstate 95 will see two additional lanes in each direction.

“We have engineers and inspectors on site every day to ensure that the work being carried out meets our safety criteria but also provides good value for taxpayers because at the end of the day it’s really about ensuring that our infrastructure is stable and.” “To make sure that what we as taxpayers invest in our infrastructure really lasts,” Ray said.

FDOT officials remind drivers to pay attention and slow down when approaching a work zone.

“There are constantly changing lane closures and traffic changes along a given corridor. “So we really want drivers to be aware and aware of changes in the roadway as they move through a construction zone,” Hampton said.
