Hazmat incident at Rural King Store sparks response in Franklin County

First responders in Franklin County were called to a hazardous materials incident at the Rural King store on Wayne Ave. late Sunday evening. called in Chambersburg. Firefighters arrived around 11:36 p.m. after employees reported feeling unwell and smelling a gas-like smell.

During the investigation, the Chambersburg Fire Department found significant damage to pallets containing hazardous materials, including liquid chlorinators, gypsum, Greenskepper winter fertilizer and hydrochloric acid. Approximately 30 gallons of liquid chlorine and seven bags of fertilizer were affected, resulting in a moderate chemical spill.

Hazardous materials teams from Franklin County, Cumberland County and Letterkenny, as well as regional fire and police departments responded to the scene. Although all store employees were examined, none of them required medical transport.
