At least seven dead in Mother’s Day weekend shootings across the country

At least seven people were killed in a spate of deadly shootings over the weekend across the country, including in Georgia, Florida and Ohio.

Two people were killed in a shooting at an Atlanta nightclub early Sunday morning. According to the Atlanta Police Department, officers responded to the Elleven45 Lounge at 2110 Peachtree Road Northwest around 2:28 a.m. and found six people shot.

Two of them were pronounced dead at the scene and two others were taken to a nearby hospital and are expected to survive. The condition of the other victims is currently unknown.

“Preliminary investigation indicates the shooting occurred during a physical argument at the location that escalated into gunfire,” the Atlanta Police Department said in a news release.

Police did not say anyone was in custody in connection with the incident, which is currently under investigation.

In Tallahassee, police found “multiple victims with gunshot wounds” at 1147 Apalachee Parkway around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. According to an update on X, two men were pronounced dead at the scene.

“Two additional adult victims were transported to a local hospital with gunshot wounds, but their condition is unknown,” Tallahassee police said X.

Police did not provide information about the events leading up to the shooting or whether anyone is in custody in connection with the shooting. Tallahassee investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting to come forward.

Around the same time, elsewhere in Florida, Tampa police officers began investigating a shooting in a parking lot in the 500 block of S. Howard Avenue in which three men suffered gunshot wounds.

All three men were taken to hospital, where two were pronounced dead. According to Tampa police, the victims have been identified as 28-year-old Kenneth Washington and 23-year-old Kevon Christmas. The third man has non-life-threatening injuries.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, it is believed that the three injured persons knew each other and had previously interacted with each other,” Tampa police said in a news release. “Before the shots were fired, the three adult men were involved in an argument that then escalated.”

Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said officers and investigators are continuing to collect evidence and investigate the incident.

“My thoughts are with the families affected by this violence, especially on a day like today,” Bercaw said of the Mother’s Day shooting.

A Euclid, Ohio, police officer was fatally shot Saturday evening after a gunman ambushed him, according to the Euclid Police Department. Officers responded to a home in the 300 block of East 211th Street after a disturbance was reported prior to the incident. It is currently not clear what the malfunction was.

The suspect in the shooting was identified as Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, who is still at large, NBC affiliate WKYC reported.

The officer was identified as Jacob Derbin by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, who said in a opinion that the suspect responsible “will be found and receive the full measure of justice.”

“It is a cruel irony that a mother lost her son on Mother’s Day and that this murder occurred just as we were preparing to honor our fallen during Police Memorial Week,” Yost said.
