Turks and Caicos Islands: Police investigate brazen shooting incident in Five Cays

Officers with the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force are investigating a brazen incident that occurred when officers responded to a report of a shooting that left a man injured.

Dean Holden, Head of Crime, Safety, Public Protection and Intelligence, said: “At around 10.30pm on Friday, May 10, officers from the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force were conducting patrols along Reece Street, Five Cays, Providenciales, unknown persons began shooting at them.”

Superintendent Holden then said: “Additional officers responded to the scene and began searching for the shooters, but were unsuccessful.” Officers were leaving the scene when they heard the sound of multiple gunshots coming from the direction the attackers were fleeing on foot .

“Officers conducted a second chase but were unable to apprehend the shooters. About five minutes after leaving the scene, officers received a report that a man with gunshot wounds was in an area called The Wells in Five Cays.

“When officers arrived at the location, they saw a man lying on the ground. As officers attempted to transport the victim, shots were heard again, causing damage to a police vehicle. Fortunately, none of our officers or bystanders were injured.”

The 24-year-old victim was taken to a medical facility for treatment. Additionally, officers arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the shooting.

“Despite the risks and challenges, our officers remained vigilant. They pursued the shooters, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to apprehending those who threaten the safety of our citizens. This incident highlights the grave danger our officers face every day in their efforts to maintain law and order. We condemn such brazen attacks on our officers and the community they serve.

“We will continue to work tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice and ensure the safety of our islands. Together and with the support of our community, we will overcome these challenges and create a safer future for everyone.”

The RTCIPF asks the public to notify the nearest police department, contact 911, the Serious Crime Unit at 231-1842 and Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477 and anonymously provide any information regarding this incident and illegal activity.
