Wytheville police remember fallen officers during National Police Week

National Police Week is May 12-18 and the Wytheville Police Department is honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

WPD said it also celebrates its department’s commitment.

“With a combined 400 years of experience, our officers are committed to providing the highest level of service to our community in everything from policing and patrols to investigations and maintaining professional law enforcement accreditation standards,” the department wrote in a Facebook post.

National Police Week was established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy. He designated May 15 as National Peace Officers Remembrance Day to honor officers who died in service to their communities.

The WPD said it is grateful for the support it is receiving from the community.

“This commitment is a two-way street, and that is why we maintain our ‘Community First’ policing philosophy,” the department wrote.

The department will remember four officers who lost their lives in Wytheville this week. A special honor will be given to each officer from Tuesday to Friday.
