England report an incident in the first half of their qualifier for Poland following a violent scuffle

England have reported an incident following a violent collision just before half-time in their World Cup qualifier against Poland.

Three Lions players were outraged by an incident as they left the pitch at the Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw on Wednesday evening.

Television cameras did not capture clear images of exactly what happened to trigger the scuffle involving almost every player on the pitch, but footage shown later on ITV appeared to show Poland defender Kamil Glik pinching Kyle Walker’s neck.

Referee Daniel Siebert dismissed both England centre-back Harry Maguire and Glik after the heated argument and it is unclear at this stage whether anything else happened.

But afterwards Gareth Southgate confirmed that England were investigating and the incident was reported to the refereeing team and match delegates.

It is now up to FIFA to investigate the matter and establish the full facts.

“We are in the process of finding out what that was,” Southgate told BBC Radio 5 Live. “A report has been prepared and we need to find out a bit more about what happened.

“At the moment we are still collecting all the evidence, so there is no point in speculating any further.”

Harry Kane added: “Just before half-time there was an incident which was reported to the FA people. You take care of it and investigate it, and then we move on.

“Supposedly it was done, not said. We didn’t have a chance to look at the footage.”

Meanwhile, Southgate admits England missed the chance to almost qualify for the World Cup in Poland.

Damian Szymanski’s stoppage-time equalizer ended the Three Lions’ 100 per cent record in Group I, but they are still four points clear at the top.

Southgate reminded his players there was still work to be done after the 1-1 draw, but heartbreakingly welcomed their reaction to defeat in the Euro 2020 final in the summer.

He said: “Over the ten days they were fantastic. One couldn’t be sure what the reaction would be after the summer.

“We knew that if we could win the game today we would be as good as Qatar. That is not the case, there is still a lot to do.

“We could have been in an even stronger position, that’s disappointing, but I can’t blame the players for the way they’ve reacted since the summer.”

Kane gave England the lead in the 72nd minute and appeared to be the winner until Szymanski’s goal.

The England captain said: “In the end it was a difficult decision. I thought we handled the game really well. We made progress and saw the game well.

“When you’re away, the pressure increases. We still have a five point lead at the top.

“It’s been two tough away games, we’re five ahead (against Poland) and we’re in a great position.”
