Alameda County dispatcher killed by suspected drunk driver

SAN LEANDRO – Authorities say an emergency dispatcher was struck and killed by a suspected drunken driver on her way to work in San Leandro on Sunday evening.

The two-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of East 14th Street and 150th Avenue around 11:15 p.m., San Leandro police said in a news release.

The victim was taken to an area hospital where he died from his injuries. She was identified as Antoinette Finau, an emergency dispatcher with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.

According to police, Finau was on his way to work when the accident occurred. An investigation revealed that while crossing the intersection, her car was broadsided and overturned.

The driver of the second vehicle was not injured in the accident. Police said she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

“The San Leandro Police Department extends our condolences to the victim’s family and the men and women of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office,” said Lt. Jeffrey Walton. “This is a tragic loss of life and a painful reminder of the dangers of driving while impaired.”
