AATSA blocks national highway, demands arrest of rape accused

Digboi: National Highway No. 38 was blocked by protesters demanding the arrest of a person accused of rape. The Protesters Negligence and inaction of the police in the matter were also alleged.

A large number of members of the All Assam Tea Students Association As a sign of protest, they blocked National Road No. 38 on Saturday. The members of the organization understood this action as a sign of protest. They called for the arrest of a perpetrator who is said to have raped a girl. They demanded the arrest of the accused Ravi Saikia.

The protesters mentioned that although one of the accused named Munna Bhumij was arrested in connection with the incident, the second accused named Ravi Saika managed to escape and is still running away from the police forces to this day. They demanded that the police immediately arrest the fleeing person and take very strict action against both accused. They added that no action was taken by the police against any of the accused.

It is to be noted that Ravi Saikia and Munna Bhumij were accused of committing the crime on April 21. They were accused of giving the victim intoxicating substances and raping her while she was under the influence of alcohol. They also threatened her with dire consequences and asked her not to talk about the incident to anyone. The victim finally filed a complaint about the matter with the on May 8th Digboi Police Station.

Earlier, the protesters had given the concerned police officials 24 hours to arrest Ravi Saikia. They blocked the highway in protest against the authorities’ failure to arrest him within that deadline. It remains to be seen whether the police authorities will be able to arrest the accused or whether the demonstrators will comply with their demands.
