Two Iowa State rowing students die after a boating accident

Two Iowa State University students died after members of the school’s crew club had an accident on a lake north of Ames.

The students were practicing at Little Wall Lake in Hamilton County on Sunday morning when their boat capsized, the university said in a news release. Three were rescued and a diving team recovered the body of a student later in the day.

The search for the fifth student was called off Sunday evening and her body was recovered early Monday using “advanced sonar technology,” the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The three rescued students were treated at an Ames hospital and released.

University President Wendy Wintersteen said in a news release that “the Iowa State community is heartbroken to learn of this tragic accident.”

In an email to NBC News, Hamilton County Sheriff Doug Timmons declined to provide further details about the deceased rowers.

The students were part of the Iowa State Crew Club, a recognized student organization. Little Wall Lake is about 15 miles north of Ames.

Iowa State University said it would conduct “an internal review of policies and procedures related to this incident,” which it said could take “days or weeks.”

Iowa State said the names of the rowers who died have not been released because families have not yet been notified.
