Shocking moment: Woman is said to have been attacked while jogging in broad daylight

A young Australian woman has recounted the emotional moments after she fell victim to a suspected random attack while jogging in broad daylight this week, warning other women to “be careful and aware of their surroundings”.

Breanna Coats, 24, was running through Huntfield Heights in Adelaide with her Apple Airpods when she was suddenly approached by two teenage girls.

“I kind of went left so they could walk past me,” she recalled to Yahoo News. “But they got in my face, so I stopped my music and asked if they were OK.”

She says the teens then asked her if she had a vape before allegedly lashing out, physically grabbing her arm and pulling her hair.

“They pushed me to the ground and she (one of the teens) kicked me repeatedly in the head,” Breanna said. Eventually, a car passing nearby stopped to help and the girls ran away, she said.

In the moments after the alleged attack, the young woman filmed herself in what she described as a state of complete shock.

“I’m shaking… I was just attacked. What the fuck,” she says to the camera in the 19-second clip, showing off a large bruise under her right eye.

Speaking to Yahoo, she said she recorded the short video and sent it to family members and only hours later decided to post it online as a sort of PSA for others in the area, as well as women across the country.

“A lot of people have asked me why I’m filming,” she said. “I was just so shocked that I didn’t actually feel anything and I didn’t know if there was any damage… I pulled out my phone camera to look at it and then started recording it.” She shared it about eight hours later on TikTok, in part to “raise awareness” and because she believed there were other victims like her, she added.

It comes as violence against women and the government’s response have been at the center of the national debate.

“It sounds really sexist, but I usually look for men and things like that,” Breanna told Yahoo. “I didn’t think two young girls were capable of something like that.”

South Australia Police confirmed that a 13-year-old girl was arrested and released on bail in connection with the incident on Thursday, while on Friday a 16-year-old girl was arrested for aggravated assault and was also charged with two other outstanding cases of aggravated assault and Shoplifting.
