At least ten dead in bus accident in Indonesia’s West Java province – Xinhua

JAKARTA, May 12 (Xinhua) — At least 10 people were killed and more than 10 others injured in a bus accident in Subang district of Indonesia’s West Java province on Saturday, according to a rescuer.

The accident occurred at 6:45 p.m. Jakarta time on Kampung Palasari Street, said provincial search and rescue bureau chief Hery Marantika, whose personnel were involved in evacuating the victims.

“I have received reports that 10 people were killed and more than 10 others were injured,” he told Xinhua by telephone.

Those with serious injuries were taken to Subang General Hospital for treatment, while those with minor injuries were taken to nearby health clinics, he said.

The bus was carrying over 40 people, most of whom were students returning from a leisure destination, he said.

Senior police officer Asep Setia Permana said the bus driver was unable to control the vehicle after brake failure. The bus hit two motorcycles before rolling on, he added.

According to media reports, the death toll from the tragedy rose to 11 early Sunday.

“The death toll in this accident is 11, including six women and five,” West Java Police Inspector General Ahmad Wiyagus was quoted as saying by the Jakarta Globe.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated.
