Team Penske suspends four key employees after push-to-pass IndyCar scandal

Roger Penske has suspended a number of key employees of his own IndyCar team following the recent push-to-pass scandal.

Team Penske driver Josef Newgarden was disqualified from the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersberg after IndyCar discovered its push-to-pass system had been tampered with.

Six weeks after the event, IndyCar officials discovered it was being used illegally in starts and restarts, improving Newgarden’s chances.

Newgarden forfeited his win and Scott McLaughlin was also disqualified.

Will Power also received a penalty, but since he was found not to be using the system illegally, he was not excluded from the results.

Penske has suspended the team’s president, Tim Cindric, and general manager, Ron Ruzewski.

They will be forced to sit out the next two IndyCar rounds – the Sonsio Grand Prix and the Indy500 later this month.

Number two race engineer Luke Mason and lead data engineer Robbie Atkinson were also suspended.

“I recognize the magnitude of what happened and the impact it continues to have on the sport to which I have dedicated so many decades,” Penske said.

“Everyone at Team Penske, as well as our fans and business partners, should know that I apologize and deeply regret the mistakes made.”

A statement from Team Penske was also released: “Following the penalties imposed on the Team Penske INDYCAR team and drivers after Long Beach, Team Penske has completed an internal review.

“After a complete and comprehensive analysis of the information, Team Penske determined that there were significant errors in our processes and internal communications. As a result, Luke Mason (#2 Race Engineer) and Robbie Atkinson (Senior Data Engineer) are suspended from Team Penske for the next two INDYCAR races, including the Indianapolis 500.

“In addition, Ron Ruzewski (General Manager, Team Penske INDYCAR) and Tim Cindric (President of Team Penske), who is responsible for overall Team Penske operations, will also be suspended for these two races.”
