First alarm forecast: A great start to the weekend!

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Looks like a very nice start to Mother’s Day weekend, but storms are on the horizon. Many people are still recovering after severe storms and tornadoes struck parts of central Mississippi Thursday evening. In total, there were 8,700 customers without power across the Magnolia State this morning.

Expect sunshine and lots of it today. A pleasant start this morning with temperatures in the low 60s, right on our seasonal normal of 61 degrees. We’ll warm up to 80 degrees this afternoon, while our normal high should be 83 degrees. Moisture reaccumulating from the Gulf of Mexico. A warm front is developing and will bring a few clouds with it on Sunday. We give you this First warning about our next weather report, which will be here from Sunday to Monday. There will be widespread showers and thunderstorms on Sunday night, which will last until Monday. We are waiting for isolated strong to severe storms to develop, but the main threat will be heavy rainfall, possibly 5 to 7 centimeters. The Storm Prediction Center sees a Level 2 out of 5 threat for severe storms, damaging winds, quarter-sized hail and tornadoes. The First Alert Weather team will be tracking it for you on air, online and in the free First Alert Weather app.

We’ll get a break Monday afternoon, but by Tuesday another cold front is expected to hit us Monday evening. A midweek dry spell will give way to another storm system by Thursday. Further heavy rain and severe storms are possible for Thursday and Friday.
