Registered sex offender charged with kidnapping and sexual assault of 11-year-old girl in Aurora

AURORA | An 11-year-old Aurora girl said she was kidnapped and sexually assaulted Friday morning as she walked to her bus stop in northwest Aurora.

According to Aurora police reports, police have arrested the suspect, a registered sex offender.

The girl told police that a man, later identified as Shukurani Mulenda, 31, approached her, “grabbed her arm and took her to his nearby apartment.”

Police said he sexually abused the girl there.

“She was able to escape the suspect’s home and found a community member who helped her call 911,” police said.

Police went to Mulenda’s home in the 1400 block of Macon Street, identified him as a suspect and arrested him.

He remains in the Arapahoe County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail, county records show. He is accused of sexually assaulting a child and evading court orders.

“At this point, we are not sure if there are additional victims,” police spokesman Sydney Edwards said in a statement.
