Zelensky’s legitimacy is beyond question due to the suspension of elections during the war

President Volodymyr Zelensky will retain his legitimacy and powers after his five-year term expires on May 21 until the election of the next head of state, when wartime regulations are lifted. Ukrainian Justice Minister Denys Malyuska confirmed this in an interview with BBC News Ukraine.

Justice Minister rejects speculations in this regard

“The powers of the President remain until his successor is elected. However, certain provisions of the Constitution are open to interpretation and invite speculation or conspiracy theories,” Malyuska said.

He acknowledged: “There may be significant debate and criticism, especially considering that the drafters of the Constitution may not have fully foreseen the possibility of Ukraine becoming involved in a large-scale conflict, which has led some Provisions are inadequately worded.”

The timing for an appeal to the Constitutional Court is inappropriate

Malyuska considers it inappropriate to ask the Constitutional Court for clarification regarding certain constitutional ambiguities.

“Such an appeal would raise legitimate questions and doubts that would justify a decision by the Constitutional Court. Given the country’s communications and security challenges, openly questioning the president’s legitimacy would be a grave mistake.

“That’s why I don’t see any point in turning to the Constitutional Court now. “Perhaps it could be considered in the future under different circumstances, but not at this point,” Malyuska said.
