Moment an iconic Sydney figure was attacked

Footage of the moment beloved Sydney activist and identity leader Danny Lim was attacked at a Sydney train station can be released for the first time after the father of five responsible for the attack was fined this week over the ugly incident became.

CCTV released by the magistrates court shows the moment Ming Wiseman, 66, angrily confronted and punched Mr Lim during a heated confrontation in front of shocked onlookers, including schoolchildren, at Strathfield station concourse on September 22 last year.

In court this week, Wiseman pleaded not guilty to felony assault.

However, Judge Vivien Swain rejected his argument that he had acted in self-defence, found him guilty and recorded a conviction.

The court heard Mr Lim – who is known in Sydney for carrying his trademark sandwich boards that exude peace and positivity – suffered a red mark on his left eye after being punched with his right fist during the scuffle.

Video surveillance shown in court showed Wiseman walking through the checkout with a backpack and his shopping cart at 3:21 p.m.

The court heard that the couple had also had an argument at the same train station earlier the same day, but it turned violent when Wiseman encountered Mr Lim a second time.

In the video, Mr Lim, who was 79 at the time, can be seen talking to a station employee who is wearing one of his signature sandwich boards across his chest, bearing slogans about “peace” and “love”.

At that time he was campaigning for the Yes vote to Parliament.

Wiseman placed his shopping cart and bag next to two trash cans and angrily pointed his finger at Mr Lim as he approached.

During his testimony in court, Mr Lim said he heard someone approaching from behind and uttering swear words.

The footage showed Mr Lim leaning against a wall before a physical altercation broke out.

During the hearing this week, the prosecution admitted that Mr Lim threw a punch when he tried to defend himself.

A video showed the two getting into a physical altercation before it was broken up by a woman in a black shirt.

“He swung with his right fist,” Mr Lim said during his testimony, then added that he was hit on the left side of his face.

Judge Vivien Swain found that Wiseman had punched Mr Lim in the face during the scuffle, although Wiseman claimed Mr Lim had deliberately inflicted his own injuries – a claim the activist strenuously denied during his testimony.

When stopped by police a short time later, Wiseman claimed he was acting in self-defense, saying, “I didn’t hit and he started first.”

The court heard Wiseman and Mr Lim had previously clashed at Burwood and Town Hall stations.

Wiseman was convicted and fined $600 and Ms Swain also filed an 18-month AVO to protect Mr Lim.

In court on Monday, Wiseman called Mr Lim a “disgrace” and said he had taken exception to some of his signs which contained the word “CVN’T”.

“He is a disgrace to our Chinese community, so I must expose him whenever I can.”
