1 dead on the SC highway after a car and semi-trailer collided, the highway police said

One person was killed and another was injured in an early morning crash on a highway in Richland County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

A 2014 Volvo tractor-trailer and a 2024 Toyota four-door were traveling south on Interstate 77 around 3:15 a.m. Saturday, Cpl. David Jones said as the car hit the back of the tractor-trailer.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to a local hospital for his injuries.

The driver of the Toyota died at the scene of the accident. They have not been publicly identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

The highway police are investigating the accident.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, 306 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2024 as of Saturday, at least 16 of them in Richland County.
