Embrace the Past, Inspire the Future: PBN’s Celebration of Preservation

As the fresh May flowers herald the arrival of spring, PBN invites you to embark on a journey through time and traditions. This Preservation Month, we’re not just remembering the past; we actively participate in it.

Join us to kick off a month-long celebration with a series of events that are as enriching as they are entertaining. The month began with a preservation picnic to build momentum around our local landmark application for the historic Vaux Barn and will end with a celebration of preservation in WNY at our annual awards ceremony. preservation – this month’s event lineup offers something for everyone.

So mark your calendars and get ready to be part of a movement that’s about more than just preserving buildings: it’s also about fostering community.

May 12: Echoes of the Bold: The Daredevil Legacy of Niagara, 1 p.m.

Oakwood Cemetery – 763 Portage Rd, Niagara Falls, NY – 14301

Join us on Sunday, May 12 at 1 p.m. for a journey through the final resting places of the intrepid and the daring. This special tour will be led by PBN’s Laura Fitzgerald, Director of Operations and Grants Management, a seasoned connoisseur of 19th and early 20th century cemeteries.

As you stroll Oakwood’s trails lined with century-old trees, you’ll discover the stories of those who dared to challenge the roaring waters of Niagara. The tour promises an afternoon of reflection, steeped in the rich history of the Niagara frontier.

The Daredevil Tour is more than just another walking tour; it’s an immersive experience that resonates with echoes of the past, inviting you to become part of Niagara’s rich heritage.

May 18: Broadway Historic District – Walking tour, 1 p.m.

Meet at the Lancaster Municipal Building – 5423 Broadway, Lancaster, NY 14086

Discover the architectural treasures of the Broadway Historic District with a walking tour led by our lead curator and architectural historian, Brandon Kennedy. As you stroll through the village of Lancaster, you will be captivated by the stories etched into the facades of historic buildings. This tour is a must for anyone who cherishes the complex stories of our built environment.

May 29: Workshop on the historic tax credit for homeowners, 6 p.m.

Eugene V. Debs Social Hall – 483 Peckham St, Buffalo, NY – 14206

Preservation Buffalo Niagara, Preservation Studios and Fillmore District Councilman Mitch Nowakowski are co-sponsoring a free workshop on the New York State Historic Homeownership Rehabilitation Credit. The workshop is open to the public and participants will learn about the user-friendly application, intended to be prepared and submitted by the owners themselves. Owner-occupied homes in the City of Buffalo that are listed on the National Register, whether individually designated or as contributing to a National Register historic district, are eligible for the 20% tax credit. Join us at Debs Hall for an educational evening at one of Polonia’s historic taverns…and perhaps, enjoy a local beer or two while you learn. Beers and snacks will be available for purchase.

May 30: Preservation Prize, 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

Buffalo History Museum – 1 Museum Ct, Buffalo, NY – 14216

Celebrate preservation champions at our annual Preservation Awards. This prestigious event, hosted at the Buffalo History Museum, honors individuals and organizations who have excelled in preserving Buffalo’s historic legacy. It’s an evening of honors and aspirations, set against the backdrop of our city’s rich past.
