Could we see the Northern Lights again over Georgia tonight?

The geomagnetic storm that brought the northern lights to northern Georgia was initially expected to be a G4 level, which would have meant the aurora would only have been seen as far north as North Carolina. Alabama and Tennessee.

The geomagnetic storm index was increased to G5 Friday evening and the aurora was visible even as far as the Gulf of Mexico.

Level G5 was still observed at 7:28 a.m. Saturday, according to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. This means we may still be able to see the Northern Lights in northern Georgia tonight.

While it’s not guaranteed we’ll see them again, the chance is there and you’ll want to get out and try to catch the event after sunset and into the early hours of tomorrow morning.

The best times to view will be from 10 p.m. until the early hours of tomorrow morning. Cloud cover is expected to move in around mid-morning, which could impact viewing at times.

This is an extremely rare event and you won’t want to miss it, so be sure to get out and take some photos. When you receive these photos, be sure to share them with our 11Alive StormTrackers.
