Two people were killed after a motorcycle collided with a car during a deputy chase in Fresno, police said

Two people died in a collision following a police pursuit in Fresno on Saturday morning.

Fresno Police Lt. Henry Garcia III said just after 1:30 a.m., Fresno County Sheriff’s Office officers pursued a motorcycle north on Maroa Avenue approaching Ashlan Avenue.

The motorcyclist entered the intersection at a high rate of speed and crashed into a moving dark sedan, killing the male and female driver, Garcia said.

The department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit was investigating the collision to determine who was at fault, Garcia said.

“We are also looking into whether or not FSO aborted the pursuit before the collision,” he said.

Garcia said officers saw a motorcycle driving recklessly through the city, got behind the driver and gave chase.

Officers requested air support and additional assistance before the motorcyclist entered the intersection.

“As far as we know, the officers involved said the black sedan was not associated with the pursuit,” Garcia said.

“It was just a single vehicle traveling westbound toward Ashlan when the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed so it was unable to stop in time and collided with the driver in that black sedan.”

The intersection was closed for several hours.
