Police in KCK shoot and kill suspect in exchange for gunfire on I-35 late Friday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A suspect is dead after a shootout with a Kansas City, Kansas, police officer on Interstate 35 late Friday night.

According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, which is leading the investigation into the shooting in Kansas City, Kansas, police learned that there was a reported stolen vehicle near the S 7th Street Trafficway and Interstate 35.

The stolen vehicle was a silver Hyundai Sonata.

At approximately 11:10 p.m., a resident called police to report that a silver car had stopped in the 1500 block of S. 7th Street Trafficway.

A KCKPD officer arrived at the scene and observed three men fleeing the car.

The officer began pursuing the suspects, who ran onto a ramp on southbound I-35.

As the chase began, a man hid in thick undergrowth and shot the officer from behind.

The officer returned fire and struck the man several times. The man died at the scene of the accident.

A second officer was able to take a 16-year-old suspect into custody.

According to the KBI, a third suspect managed to elude police and authorities were still searching for him Saturday.

Two handguns were found at the scene.
