Man dies in solo accident in Lee County

An Opelika man was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Lee County.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) identified the victim as 51-year-old Orlando R. Welch.

Senior Trooper Joshua Thompson said the accident occurred around 12:01 a.m. Saturday on Lee County 145 near U.S. 280, about two miles west of Smith Station.

Welch was fatally injured when the 2002 Buick Park Avenue he was driving left the roadway, struck a stone pillar and rolled over. Welch was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is continuing by troopers from ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division.
