AARP Scam Alert: FWN Survey Results

Theft through fraud has increased exponentially over the last five years. A recent Federal Trade Commission (FTC) report found that reported fraud losses exceeded $10 billion in 2023, up from $2.4 billion in 2019. A recent AARP Fraud Watch Network (FWN) survey showed That this increase does not go unnoticed 58% of people are afraid of fraud.

The survey also found that many people have lost money or personal information due to scams and scams. Overall, 42% of people reported losing money, but significantly more people lost money among African Americans (56%) and veterans (50%). Unfortunately, less than half (46%) of scam victims shared their experiences with friends and family.

Stealing money or sensitive information from a fraudster can be a traumatic experience, and all too often victims want to keep this trauma secret. However, it is often more damaging and isolating because victims end up suffering in silence. It’s also a missed opportunity to protect friends and family by telling an important story that could help keep them safe.
