The family of an 11-year-old boy who died in a fireworks accident will “never” buy them again, says aunt

His loved ones are remembering an Indiana boy who died in a fireworks accident over the Fourth of July weekend.

Camrynn McMichael, 11, of Mount Vernon, was “seriously injured” in a fireworks incident on N. Canal Street in his hometown, according to Indiana State Police. He later succumbed to his injuries while being transported to a local hospital.

Now Alexandra Eaton, Camrynn’s aunt, tells PEOPLE the family will “never” buy fireworks again. “Every time we hear fireworks, we are all reminded of the loss of Cam,” she says, adding that he was “an amazing big brother” and friend.

A preliminary autopsy report found the boy suffered a fatal head injury in a “firework mortar” accident, Posey County Coroner Bill Denning said Tuesday, according to the Evansville Courier & Press.

Camrynn’s mother previously told the outlet that her son was protecting his younger sister “like a big brother should!”

Further details have not been provided by authorities and the coroner’s office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Since the boy’s death, Camrynn’s family has been touched by the outpouring of support she has received from her local community and beyond.

One man, Timothy Land, even gave up $1,300 of “his hard-earned money” to help the family pay funeral costs, Eaton tells PEOPLE.

“They need it more than I do,” Land told NBC affiliate WFIE, adding that he would eventually “make money back.” “They won’t bring their child back. As simple as that.”

Eaton told the outlet that she and her family “cried” and “hugged him tightly” after learning of his gesture.

“I know (Camrynn) is up there smiling and thinking he’s the coolest person because, you know, here comes this weird guy who’s just helping him,” she noted. “And that’s just incredible.”

While the family has received a lot of support, there have also been critics — and Eaton tells PEOPLE that her sister and brother-in-law “need prayers and time to grieve,” not “judgment.”

“They will have to live with the loss of their son for the rest of their lives,” she said, adding that the couple “raised an incredibly loving boy” who is clearly loved by his community.

“My sister dedicated her life to Cam and my beautiful niece. And his dad turned that into motivation to be the best dad he can be to make Cam proud,” she says.

“Anyone who has something to say, please find it in your heart to just be kind because not everyone on this planet Earth is perfect and we are all just human,” she added.

Several local events are planned to raise money for Camrynn’s funeral expenses, including an American Legion fundraiser on July 16 and an auction on July 30, WFIE reported.

Additionally, a GoFundme campaign for Camrynn’s funeral expenses has raised nearly $7,500 as of Friday afternoon.

“We couldn’t thank them enough for loving him because I know he’s smiling big up there with the big man playing ball,” she added.
