Police are investigating a hit-and-run in South Knoxville, Tennessee, on Maryville Pike

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – Knoxville Police are investigating a hit-and-run that occurred overnight in South Knoxville.

Police shared photos of the vehicle involved resting on its roof in a grassy area.


Knoxville police said there were no occupants in the vehicle, but there were signs of alcohol consumption. One photo shows at least two beer bottles lying in the car.

“There is absolutely no reason to drive under the influence of alcohol. Always use a sober driver or ride-sharing app. Our officers are committed to stopping drunk driving and holding them accountable for their reckless decisions,” KPD wrote in a Facebook post.

Knoxville Police also said they, the Knoxville Fire Department and AMR responded to the scene.

In Tennessee, one in three fatal crashes and one in seven serious injury crashes are drunk driving, reports the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 37 people die in alcohol-influenced crashes in the United States, or about one person every 39 minutes.
