Rishabh Pant suspended for one match and fined Rs 30 lakh for violating the IPL code of conduct

Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant has been suspended for one match and fined for violating the IPL code of conduct. DC was found to have maintained a slow over rate during its IPL 2024 match against Rajasthan Royals on May 7 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

DC, currently fifth in the IPL points table, will face fellow playoff contenders Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Sunday evening.

“As it was his team’s third offense this season under the IPL Code of Conduct relating to minimum overage violations, Rishabh Pant has been fined Rs 30 lakh and suspended for one match,” the IPL said in a statement on Saturday afternoon Explanation.

“The remaining members of the playing eleven, including the Impact Player, have been individually fined either Rs 12 lakh or 50 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is less,” the statement said.

DC had appealed against match referee Daniel Manohar’s decision. The matter was then referred to the BCCI Ombudsman for review.

After a virtual hearing, the Ombudsman confirmed that the match referee’s decision remains final and binding.

Pant, DC head coach Ricky Ponting and director of cricket Sourav Ganguly were present at the hearing, which was also attended by BCCI CEO Hemang Amin and the match referee.

Pant denied that the delay was also caused by the fact that the match day in question was the hottest day in Delhi and therefore the heat was a major factor in the slow overheating. He further submitted that the review, which included the dismissal of RR captain Sanju Samson, took about 5-6 minutes and hence the 3-minute allowance was given instead

insufficient.

Ponting added that due to the delivery of several wide deals towards the end of the innings by the DC’s bowlers, there was no time to compensate for the delay caused as there were no overs to help increase the over rate through the use of overs increase spinners. He added that Pant should not be blamed for the delay caused by the bowlers in the game.

On the other hand, Ganguly said 13 sixes were hit by their batters during the course of RR’s innings, but the resulting ball retrieval allowance of 0.30 minutes was given to DC only three times.
