T&F: Boon and Quintanilla medals on the second day of the SLC championships

HOUSTON, Texas – Senior Scott Boon won a medal in the decathlon while a sophomore Destiny Quintanilla broke the program record in the steeplechase en route to her own medal Friday at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Rice’s Holloway Field.


Boon started the day with 766 points thanks to a time of 15.71 before a throw of 38.09m/125-0 added another 626 points. He then matched his PR in the pole vault, clearing a maximum height of 4.90m/16-1 for 880 points. Boon tallied 597 points with a throw of 50.59m/166-0 in the javelin, the penultimate event of the decathlon, before closing out by winning the 1,500 meters with a PR time of 4:24.48 for 781 points. He finished the decathlon with 7,555 points, just 47 points off his PR, to win the bronze medal. The medal marks the fourth SLC decathlon podium of his career, having won one silver and two golds during his career.


Second year student Destiny Quintanilla won the bronze medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase while breaking the school record in that event by 16 seconds with a time of 10:52.23. The previous record of 11:08.23 was set by Johanna Drews in 2021. In the men’s long jump, freshmen Dadrian Calhoun jumped to a PR mark of 7.34m/24-1 to improve his previous best by more than a foot and collect three points for the Huskies with a sixth-place finish.


During the preliminaries, Jessica Rabius earned his ticket to the 800-meter final by winning his heat in 2:14.97 while Éline Mât qualified for tomorrow’s final by winning her heat with a time of 2:15.56. Krzysztof Turski advanced to tomorrow’s men’s 800m final, winning his heat with a time of 1:52.97. First-year student Jessica Martini ran a PR time of 12.14 in the 100 meters to qualify for Sunday’s final.


HCU’s freshman duo Ashton Munoz-Nieves And SJ Marais each earned a spot in the 110 meter hurdles final with PR scores of 14.32 and 14.55, respectively. Keys of Lanaye secured his place in the final of the 100 meter hurdles, with a time of 14.80.


The third and final day of the SLC Outdoor Championships begins on Sunday, May 11 with the women’s discus throw at 12:00 p.m.
