Russian unit refuses to attack Kharkiv Oblast

A division of a Russian motorized rifle battalion refused to take part in the attack on Kharkiv Oblast, the Atesh partisan group reported on May 10.

Russian forces launched a new offensive against Kharkiv Oblast on May 10. Fighting continues in the region, although Ukrainian troops repelled the first attempt to break through Ukraine’s defense lines.

A member of Atesh, who serves in a motorized rifle battalion of the Russian Armed Forces’ 44th Army Corps, said a division of his unit simply refused to take part in the offensive against Kharkiv Oblast.

The Atesh member said his unit’s soldiers were concerned about the high-quality fortifications built along the Russian-Ukrainian border. He also said the soldiers had witnessed unsuccessful Russian sabotage and reconnaissance operations in the region.

“In view of this, when … the order was given, part of the unit refused to carry out the criminal will of the command,” Atesh reported.

Atesh said its members would continue to work with Ukrainian forces to deter Russian attacks in Kharkiv Oblast.

President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on May 10 that the Russian military had launched a new offensive in Kharkiv Oblast. He said the Ukrainian command knew about a possible attack in that direction and was preparing for it.

Moscow recently increased attacks against Kharkivamid reports that Russia may be planning an attack on Kharkiv bigger offensive in the following months.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that fighting continues in the Lyptsi and Vovchansk directions in the north of Kharkiv Oblast, while Moscow is deploying infantry and heavy equipment in the area.

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on May 10 that Russian forces had launched a new offensive against Kharkiv Oblast. “Now a fierce battle is raging in the direction of (Kharkiv),” Zelensky said.
