Tornado hits Houston County, second strike for Cottonwood this year | WDHN

COTTONWOOD, Ala. (WDHN)—For the second time in the last four months, the town of Cottonwood was damaged after severe weather swept through the Wiregrass area.

What some are calling a possible tornado, left downed trees, power lines and more debris throughout the area.

One of the hardest hit areas was around Union Hill Baptist Church.

This comes just months after downtown was severely hit by an EF-1.

Cottonwood resident Timothy Welch said he was thankful this round of severe weather was not as destructive as January’s tornado.

“When it said ‘a tornado is coming,’ all I could think about was the previous tornado a few months ago,” Welch said. “I just thank God it’s not like it used to be. I don’t think our community can take another hit like this.

Following multiple reported power outages, city workers filled the streets to restore power to residents.

Cottonwood wasn’t the only area affected by severe weather.

Several downed trees have been reported in other areas such as Coffee, Geneva County, etc.
