Greensboro woman and her small dog attacked by another dog

Carmina Canton, 66, said she was outside on her porch when a neighborhood dog attacked her dog and then her. Her arm was torn open in the attack.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – A 66-year-old Greensboro woman is recovering from a brutal dog attack. She is still in the hospital.

She shared her story from her hospital bed with WFMY News 2’s Nixon Norman. Her name is Carmina Canton.

Canton said she was outside on her porch when a neighborhood dog attacked her dog and then her. Doctors told her she would need several reconstructive surgeries to get back to normal.

Canton said people who know her admire her strength. Beyond that, they told her they were just happy to still have her here.

“They say, ‘I can’t believe you’re still alive,'” Canton said.

Canton said she was sitting on her porch in Greensboro watching her own dogs when a neighbor’s dog attacked her dog, Bella. She said she threw her phone at the dog and it eventually ran away.

“It was definitely very scary,” Canton said.

But nothing was done there Canton said the dog then attacked her when she went to talk to her neighbor, the owner of the dog that attacked her.

“When I looked up, I saw this monster in front of me,” Canton said.

Canton has bite marks on her ankles, knees and arms… most notably her left arm, which has been torn open.

“I could see through the tendons. It broke the bone, it broke the bone in two. One in my wrist and one near the elbow,” Canton said.

She has already had one operation and another is scheduled for next week. Her dog Bella’s injuries are far less serious, but a healing process is still taking place.

“She’s in treatment, you know? She’s still on medication,” Canton said.

It’s a traumatic experience that leaves Canton in a dark place.

“I’m so sad and depressed and crying,” Canton said.

At the end of the day, Canton is grateful for her own strength and urges dog owners to keep their pets on a leash.
