According to police, two runaway teenagers are suspected of causing a barn fire in Riverdale

RIVERDALE, Weber County – Two teenagers who escaped from a youth rehabilitation center are in police custody after allegedly starting a massive barn fire on Friday.

According to Riverdale police, the juvenile rehabilitation center reported that the two teens ran away from the facility on Thursday around 3:07 p.m


Riverdale police said officers searched the area for the two teens but were unable to find them. Authorities listed them as missing juveniles.

Around 6 a.m. Friday, Riverdale police and firefighters responded to the area of ​​6000 S. Weber Drive for a report of a barn fire.

According to Riverdale police, a driver reported seeing two juveniles fleeing the barn toward Interstate 84.

Riverdale police said their officers found the two missing teens on I-84 shortly after the barn fire was reported and took them into custody.

The two teens were taken to the Weber Valley Youth Center and are being held on charges of reckless burning, burglary and vehicle theft, according to police.

Riverdale police said the barn contained farm equipment and a vehicle and was full of hay when it caught fire, resulting in a “significant” loss of property for the owner.

According to police, the juvenile rehabilitation center from which the two teenagers escaped is not a correctional facility and they were placed there with the consent of their guardian.
