Meck County Jail nurse claims she was sexually harassed and threatened – WSOC TV

CHARLOTTE — A nurse who works at the Mecklenburg County Jail claims she was sexually harassed, threatened and intimidated by a captain, officers and inmates. Now she’s suing the prison’s health care provider.

Next week, Wellpath’s contract with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office for health services ends. During this time of transition, a former Wellpath nurse is suing, alleging that a North Jail captain repeatedly made sexual comments to her over a five-month period.

According to the lawsuit, she reported the captain in April 2021 after he said he exposed himself to her and told her they would soon have sex. The lawsuit says the captain resigned after an internal affairs investigation, but the nurse’s life didn’t get any easier.

Court documents say she suffered retaliation, including officers disrespecting her in front of patients at the jail and doing nothing to intervene when patients made comments about assaulting her.

In one case, she says, an officer taught inmates a disrespectful song about her and had them sing it in front of her. She also says the officer told inmates he would give him a honey bun if they hugged her.

In June 2022, Wellpath moved her to the main prison, where she said she was concerned about her safety.

The lawsuit alleges that she was told in an August 2022 staff meeting that Wellpath was not required to provide two nurses during a shift and could not guarantee their safety at work.

When she reported to work one day in August and learned that she would be alone, she told her supervisor that she would not work under those conditions. The next day she lost her job.

The sheriff’s office told Channel 9’s Joe Bruno that it does not comment on the lawsuits, but it is important to note that it is not named in this lawsuit.

Wellpath did not email Bruno.

On May 18, the prison will transition its health care provider from Wellpath to Vitalcore Health Strategies. The Kansas company beat six others.

Wellpath terminated his contract in January after 16 years.
