Northern Lights forecast for Western New York tonight

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A strong solar storm could bring the Northern Lights, or Northern Lights, to viewers locally Friday night through Saturday night to include western New York and potentially southern New York. Pennsylvania.

The partially clear sky this evening and the mainly new moon will allow a beautiful observation of this phenomenon which can occur in the upper atmosphere of our Earth, in the ionosphere, when there is a geomagnetic solar storm and solar flares are sent here.

The best spots will be in the north and far from the light pollution of cities. Along Lake Ontario will be a top choice, with places like Chestnut Ridge or along Lake Erie as other good spots, depending on partial cloud cover.

Saturday evening will most likely have scattered rain showers and clouds which would likely locally block any potential viewing of the Northern Lights.

Friday evening might be one of the best chances to see the light show locally in about 20 years.

The Northern Lights usually appear as a faint greenish glow and can appear to dance across the night sky as they become more active. There may also be other visible colors such as pink or red.
