Edo court sends man into custody for raping a minor

A Benin High Court on Monday ordered the remand of one Osasumwen Vincent for allegedly defiling an 11-year-old in 2022.

The suspect, who is being remanded at the Benin Correctional Facility, has been charged with one count bordering on rape. However, he pleaded not guilty.

Justice Efe Ikponmwonba then adjourned the case to June 10 for hearing.

Prosecutor Hamma Iyamu previously said the suspect forcibly raped an 11-year-old girl in October 2022 at Ohovbe Quarters in Benin Legal Department.

According to the prosecution, the suspect committed an offense contrary to Section 4 and punishable under Section 5(1) of the Edo State Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law, 2021.

Iyamu added: “The suspect committed the offense in October 2022 at Ohovbe Quarters in Benin Law Department and forcibly raped an 11-year-old girl.”

“The suspect committed an offense contrary to Section 4 and punishable under Section 5 (1) of the Edo State Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law, 2021,” she added.
