Taryn Manning calls the producers of “Orange Is the New Black” “insulting” in their handling of the rape story

Orange is the new black Actress Taryn Manning posted — and later deleted — an Instagram video in which she accused the Netflix dramedy’s staff of offensive behavior related to the press cycle surrounding her character’s rape plot.

“At Orange is the new black, which most people know me for since they thought it was my only project, it was written that I was raped. “I was raped on the show, remember?” the 44-year-old said in the now-removed clip, which she originally shared overnight on Monday. “Nobody ever told me that when I had to address the press, the crowd I was going to compete against was off the wall. “So what was it like to be raped on the show?” The most controversial and pervasive topic on the planet, and I had to stand up and become a spokesman for rape. This is insulting to me.”

She then referred to “Jenji, Tara, Neri” only by their first names – apparently referring to creator Jenji Kohan and executive producers Tara Herrmann and Neri Kyle Tannenbaum – because she hadn’t prepared them for inclusion in interviews for the series such a difficult topic to discuss.

“Nobody ever told me what I would be dealing with. You just threw that at me this season, you just threw it at me. ‘Oh, she’ll just get raped, you’ll just have to deal with it.’ In the press.’ “How offensive that was,” Manning said, noting that she posted the video in the first place to respond to an earlier video (also deleted) in which she discussed complex feelings surrounding the conviction and sentencing of Danny Masterson in the Following news broke, Asthon Kutcher and Mila Kunis have written letters of support for the disgraced sitcom actor.

“Don’t come at me, I’m the problem. I’m sitting here feeling bad for someone who’s going to prison for the rest of your life and you’re still not happy because you’re haters and your.” “Demons,” Manning said, ending the video by trying to to separate her feelings for Masterson and his wife Bijou Phillips from the crimes for which the actor was sentenced to prison – and stressed that she was “not saying Danny is innocent” after he was 30 for raping two women sentenced to years to life imprisonment. “What if we remember him as our friend? What if we didn’t know that he had this tendency within him? What if we remember our friend’s story… is it wrong to know that this is our friend, and that’s it.” Someone who is not all bad and not all good, like you are not all are you bad and not just good?

Representatives for Netflix and Kohan did not immediately respond to EW’s request for comment. Herrmann and Tannenbaum also did not immediately respond to individual requests for comment.

Adapted from Piper Kerman’s memoir about a prison sentence for money laundering-related crimes, Orange is the new black debuted on Netflix in 2013 and quickly became one of the most popular original series in the streamer’s history before ending in 2019. Throughout its run, it received four Emmys and helped launch cast members Taylor Schilling, Uzo Aduba, Danielle Brooks, Samira Wiley and others to stardom.

After a repeat appearance in the show’s first season, Manning’s role as inmate Tiffany “Pennsatucky” Doggett was upgraded to a series regular for seasons 2 through 7. She won – along with the ensemble – two Screen Actors Guild Awards for their work together on the series in 2016 and 2017.

During the ongoing Screen Actors Guild strike in Hollywood, several former actors of the series – including Kimiko Glenn and Matt McGorry – claimed on social media that they were not properly compensated for their work on the series.
