Suspect shot by Ceres police officer

A man who brandished a knife at family members was shot and killed by a Ceres police officer, authorities reported Friday.

Ceres police have not yet released the name of the deceased.

According to Ceres Police, one officer suffered a non-life-threatening injury during the incident.

At 11:40 a.m. Friday, Ceres Police dispatched officers to the 3400 block of Dirk Court for a report of a man threatening family members with a knife.

The reporting officer provided the suspect’s name and officers learned he had a warrant for his arrest on multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence. The charges stemmed from an incident handled by the Modesto Police Department.

When Ceres police officers arrived at the home, the suspect fled by running through the yards of neighboring homes.

Additional resources were requested to assist in locating the suspect. A Modesto Police Department K9 officer arrived and began pursuing the suspect. Approximately 30 minutes after the initial call, the suspect was found hiding in a vehicle at a commercial property in the 3400 block of 6th Street.

Ceres police said officers were attempting to take the suspect into custody when the officer-involved shooting occurred. Details of the shooting were not released.

Officers on scene immediately initiated life-saving measures until medical personnel arrived and took over treatment. Ultimately, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer, who suffered a non-life-threatening injury, was transported to a local hospital for treatment. No other officers or residents were injured.

Ceres Police Department detectives, administrative investigators and the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene. It is common for an officer-involved shooting to have both a criminal and administrative investigation conducted simultaneously.

Further details will be released in the near future.
