Former Volusia County teacher who had sexual relations with multiple students sentenced to 21 years in prison – WFTV

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A former Volusia County teacher and coach convicted of multiple sexual relationships with students has been sentenced to 21 years in prison.

Arin Hankerd is also sentenced to another 30 years on probation for being a sex offender.

Hankerd wept as he read a written statement, telling his victims that he was deeply sorry for the pain he had caused those families.

Hankerd apologized to his victims.

One of the victims, now 22, said Hankerd took advantage of her and took advantage of the situation.

In 2022, he was a teacher and football coach at Atlantic High School.

Investigators said he had a sexual relationship with a sophomore.

Shortly after his arrest, a second student from another school reported to the police.

She said she had sex with Hankerd at his home.

The student was from Mainland High School, where Hankerd previously worked.

On Friday, it was revealed that Hankerd has mental health issues, including bipolar disorder, and that he suffers from manic episodes.

Doctors who testified, as well as one of the victims, said they now struggle with PTSD and other mental health issues as a result of their relationship with Hankerd.

“I still had a traumatic bond with him and felt like I had to stay silent,” the victim said. “Being so young and experiencing something like that stays with you whether you want it to or not.

Channel 9 reached out to attorneys for both sides for comment following the verdict, and none would comment.
