Laredo police are opening a downtown substation in the El Metro building

LAREDO, TX. (KGNS) – Residents who live and frequent downtown will feel safer knowing there is additional police presence in the area.

On Friday morning, the Laredo Police Department announced the grand opening of its Substation Five, located in the El Metro Transit Center building on Farragut Street.

Six officers will be on duty 24 hours a day from the substation and will monitor problem areas in the city center.

Laredo Police Chief Miguel Rodriguez said they decided to add this station to ensure the safety of older residents in the area and deter illegal activity.

“Drug use is huge here, secondly there are also attacks between homeless people and secondly we see a lot, namely the fact that in addition to the drug transactions there are also drug overdoses in this area,” said Chief Rodriguez. “These are things that people see and they try to stay away from that area. So we’re very happy that we’re here now, providing that visibility to the public and everyone who comes downtown.”

Chief Rodriguez added that the station is operational and fully functional.

Prior to this station, police established a station on Saint Augustine Street, which continues to be used for internal affairs.
